Guitar Tuition

Whether you’re a Beginner / Intermediate or Advanced I am here to help you proceed to the next level you demand. I teach both adults and children from any age; but require an adult to stay within the premises or accompany any child under 16.

As a beginner it can be a confusing and frustrating time when playing the guitar. I aim to make it as problem free and as fun as possible, even when it comes to theory!

Lessons will take place in the comfort of your own home. There will be no extra charge within the Gravesham District, otherwise a fuel charge will need to be considered. I am prepared to travel to areas such as Dartford, Longfield, New Ash Green, Borough Green, West Malling and Rochester.

Since the age of 16, having achieved my grade 8 music exam, I have taught various friends how to play the guitar.

Justine Millard – “Tom was extremely patient and fun to learn from. He taught me how to play various songs that I liked, starting with the chords, followed by ways of playing them i.e strumming or finger-picking”.

Oliver Pierce – “Having only ever played certain guitar riffs and chords for fun Tom helped me learn which scales the riffs came from, as well as why they fitted so well over the chords used. From this I went on to being able to write my own songs due to a much better grasp on music theory/song-writing and guitar techniques”.

My emphasis is on the practical aspects of playing, taught in a fun way by relating the materiel being shown (such as chords, scales, improvisation) with artists and bands that the student likes. The player can then put this together helping to develop their own style of playing.

As a keen arranger I can help with song-writing, looking at the musical structure, the use of chords as well as the many possible scales that could be used for the melody.

Every Student is unique in terms of their ability and wishes and are treated so. Tuition can be just for fun or done in a more structured format (following the RGT Grade Exams from preliminary to Grade 8, which students can take if they so wish). RGT Exams not only aids in the playing of the guitar but also counts towards formal qualifications. Grades 6-8 provide UCAS points helping gain entry within Colleges/Universities.
